THE NAME

Baglio di Pianetto used to be the agricultural heart of a large estate belonging to the Baron Ramione. The area’s pedoclimatic profile, the abundance of water and the proximity to Palermo and Monreale determined its importance and productive value. The name Viafrancia is an homage to the ancient road that used to cut across and connect all parts of the estate. A name and a history that its new owners, the Marzotto family, wished to honour, implanting French varieties to create an exclusive family of wines combining a unique Sicilian terroir with a touch of French flair.

THE PIANETTO ESTATE

The estate is located in Contrada Pianetto, in the municipality of Santa Cristina Gela, an area where viticulture has, since the early 19th century, acted as a modernising force in the productive history of the area surrounding Palermo. The vineyards grow at an average altitude of 650 meters above sea level. The area is well ventilated and has a high diurnal temperature range especially in the pre-harvest season, ideal conditions for the formation of a rich suite of aromas and to ensure perfect ripening. Winter is cold and rainy, summers are windy. The soil is clayey and rich in skeleton grain. The orography is varied, with inclines ranging between 10% and 20% offering a complex alternation of different altitudes and exposures. The interaction between such elements is the secret behind Baglio di Pianetto’s unique enological profile.
